Wherever huge amounts of overburden and earth have to be extracted and moved efficiently and cost-effectively in order to get at deeper raw material layers large bucket wheel excavators are used. In lignite mining they achieve capacities of up to 240,000 m³ (bank) per day, digging heights of as much as 100 m and service weights of 13,500 tons.

Depending on the mine plan, thyssenkrupp bucket wheel excavators are supplied with a connecting conveyor bridge and loading unit or as a single unit with discharge boom.

For lower volumes or specialized jobs thyssenkrupp offers compact bucket wheel excavators. Typical features of all compact bucket wheel excavators are their two-crawler travel mechanism, a so-called C frame construction and a counterweight below the discharge boom.

The Tamnava West field is located in the Kolubara coal basin south of Belgrade in Serbia.  With a need to nearly triple the mines production capacity to meet new targets for electric power production, the state-owned serbian energy company EPS turned to thyssenkrupp to install a new, highly productive BWE system and modernize another system.

This system was specifically ordered for branching out into the southern mine section. A new bucket wheel excavator system was needed to remove interbedded bands which were substantially increasing in thickness cost-effectively.”

The Neyveli coal mines operate with thyssenkrupp bucket excavators since the beginning of the operations in 1961. The deposit has some difficult properties which the ThyssenKrupp bucket wheel excavators handle with great success.

The overburden to coal ratio with 6:1 is quite high but by using the bucket wheel excavator technology the deposit can still be mined economically. Furthermore, the hard overburden strata consisting of Cuddalore sandstone posed difficulties which were overcome by suitable modifications in the bucket wheel teeth in combination with a systematic drilling and blasting program.

Today the mine still trusts in thyssenkrupp bucket wheel excavators and equipment and with an annual output of 10.5 mt the Neyveli mine is one of the most productive open-pit mines in India.

barracuda® – the smart alternative to pre-blasting and surface miner

The barracuda® compact bucket wheel excavator vastly extends the application range of bucket wheel excavators as it can dig or cut materials with average uniaxial compressive strengths of up to 50 MPa. In other words, the barracuda® is a genuine alternative to the conventional drilling and blasting methods used in mining coal, phosphate, ore and potash or the corresponding overburden and waste removal. But the barracuda® is not just a smart interesting alternative to drill and blast or surface miner; it has more to offer.

BARRACUDA

barracuda® – tailored to your needs

Electrically powered and with capacities of up to 7,500 lm³/h, the barracuda® comes in a number of versions so you can choose the one tailored to your needs.

Basic version: A very simple design capable of working as an independent machine, i.e. digging upfront and discharging a radial stockpile of the loosened material directly to the rear.

barracuda® Flexo: Equipped with a short discharge conveyor to allow the material to be more accurately directed, and designed to feed trucks, either directly via the discharge conveyor or with an additional intermediate bridge.

barracuda® System: A combination of the barracuda® Flexo and a shiftable bench conveyor that is designed to be implemented at a bench with a bench conveyor for 100% continuous operation.

barracuda® C: Offers the proven features of a conventional compact bucket wheel excavator (e.g. multi-terrace cut and continuous operation system) but has been upgraded with bucket wheel technology, which enables it also to dig harder material.

To meet the demands of harder materials the teeth arrangement has been adapted to the usual bucket wheel configurations. Buckets and precutters are positioned much closer together and there are more teeth on the bucket. This very narrow teeth arrangement gouges into the material while digging. The result is a reduction in the size of the section or the lump size that has to be dug out per tooth, which in turn means less loosening force is required. The welcome side effect is that the material in question is cut into easily conveyable pieces of less than 200mm. When the barracuda® has completed its work, the primary crushing stage is finished too – without the need for drilling, blasting or a surface miner.

The Waikato North Head Mine belongs to the company New Zealand Steel. In this place a small and compact bucket wheel excavator from thyssenkrupp just does his job since over 35 years. There the S400 series excavator shows its high reliability, adaptability and flexibility in mining operation, continuously supplying iron sand to the nearby steel mill in Glenbrook.

The Barracuda® C4700 bucket wheel excavator is part of the Continuous Mining Equipment for Overburden IX project in the Mae Moh Mine, Lampang Province, Thailand.

The excavator has been specifically designed for the removal of overburden without the need of pre-blasting. The average compressive strength of the material, consisting of approx. 90% red clay and approx. 10% claystone, was 5 to 10 MPa with maximal value of 25 MPa.”
